Top: Federal troops from Fort Thomas setting up their "pup" tents in the yards of Union miners' homes at Sharples. Bottom: A guard on duty at Jeffrey, another of the mining towns. The men in the background have just been disarmed. Jeffrey was used as a concentration point for the union miners. Seven hundred armed men were in the town when troops arrived.
