Abstract
The owner and creator of Color Magazine is Ira James Kohath Wells, born in Tamo, Arkansas. After earning his degrees from Lincoln University and University of Pittsburgh he moved to West Virginia and became the first State Supervisor of Negro Education for West Virginia from 1933 to 1952. In 1944 Wells founded Color Magazine, which was the first African American pictorial magazine in the United States. During its run it competed heavily with the newly founded Ebony Magazine, which was created a year after Color Magazine. Eventually Ebony Magazine won the fight in the 1950’s and Wells had to shut down operations for Color Magazine in the late 50’s. This source would be useful for research on Periodicals in West Virginia and Black History in West Virginia.
