A word: AFFRILACHIA

Item

"Affrilachia is an ever-evolving cultural landscape poised to render the invisible visible. Affrilachia embraces a multicultural influence, a spectrum of people who consider Appalachia home and/or identify strongly with the trials and triumphs of being of this region."

-from the Affrilachian Poets Website

"In terms of rendering of the invisible visible, one thing that I find really fascinating about looking at Affrilachia as both real and imagined space is this idea that Appalachia and West Africa were once literally geographic neighbors [see map above] .... Though it's a cruel part of history, chattel slavery, that brings people from Western Africa to the United states, ... it's an interesting concept that Affralachia is literally here millions of years ago, and then there's also this current of culture and art in the region, another powerful unification."
