About The Author
My name is Mary Linscheid. I’m a senior English Creative Writing Major at West Virginia University with Appalachian Music and Appalachian Studies minors. As a person with deep roots in not only West Virginia but Monongalia County specifically, I’ve spent my four years at WVU finding ways to use the skills I've learned to celebrate and connect with the community and culture I grew up in.
This digital exhibit is the result of two years of work in the WVU Honors EXCEL program, where students can design and execute their own community-oriented project through a process of experiential learning. I'm very grateful for all the support that they have given me.
I'd also like to thank the West Virginia & Regional History Center for their expertise and for hosting this digital exhibit on their platform. Many thanks to all the people who have shared their stories and spaces with me along the way. Thanks to my project mentor Dr. Travis Stimeling for helping me grow as a researcher, writer, and thinker. And lastly, thanks to my grandma, Joy Decker, the co-creator of this project. I couldn't have done it without her.
