Herbert Hoover, a Republican, served as U.S. president during the onset of the Great Depression. At the bottom of the cartoon a note from the editor reads: "The Republicans are Placing Signs Like this Billboard Above All Over the State of West Virginia. Democrats, Do Not Let These Signs Influence You! We Say Unto You, 'Watch!'"

“Woman to the Rescue” political cartoon

The “Woman to the Rescue” cartoon, which originally appeared in Volume 12, No. 1 of the NAACP magazine The Crisis, was sent to Senator Sutherland by a constituent. A constituent sent the cartoon to Senator Sutherland and wrote: “Making the world safe for democracy!” and “Our Hohenzollern []! Save their women of the south!” The typed quotes about Jane Addams, Susan B. Anthony, and “Thinking men shudder...” did not appear on the original.
